Jim has called southern California his home for all of his life.  He grew up in the city of San Gabriel and was raised in a catholic household by his South American parents.  Jim attended catholic school for 12 years and was a multi sport athlete throughout high school, where he competed in baseball, volleyball and soccer.

Growing up, like most southern Californians, Jim played AYSO soccer and as he got older moved on to play for the Santa Anita Soccer Club.  He attended La Salle HS in Pasadena, where he was a 3 year Varsity starter and held a 3.85 GPA throughout his high school career.  He was a 2 year All Santa Fe League First Team, selection tallied 63 assists, 43 goals and had one CIF Semifinal appearance.  Upon graduation, Jim received the Scholar Athlete Award and Excellence in PE Award.

In college, Jim redshirted his first year at Cal State Fullerton and decided to concentrate on college for the next year.  In 1990, he left Fullerton to attend and play soccer at East Los Angeles Community College.  As an ELACC Husky, he excelled on the field and in the classroom.  He was placed in the Honors program and graduated with an A.A. in 1991.  He was also a Co-Captain of the 1990 ELACC Soccer team that won the California Community College Championship with an impressive record of 24-0.  Jim scored 13 goals and gave 17 assists on a team that scored 100 goals.  He was also named to the All Conference Second Team and was recruited heavily by many Division 1 Universities.  Jim chose the familiar surroundings of San Diego State University to finish out his educational career.  At SDSU, he played forward and outside midfield on a team that was ranked as high as 16th in the nation.  His senior year, Jim started in 18 of 19 games. Jim graduated with a degree in Political Science and a minor in History.

After college, Jim continued to play soccer; he spent 6 months training with the San Diego Sockers and, in 1997, was offered a contract with the El Paso Patriots of the A League, but turned it down in favor of coaching.  Jim started a successful coaching career, first in high school at his alma mater, La Salle, in camps at UCLA and the Air Force Academy, and then returning to his Community College alma mater, ELACC to help begin the Women’s Soccer Program.  Finally, true to form, Jim returned to SDSU to become the Men’s Assistant Coach for one year.  A year later, Jim returned home to be closer to his family and became the LMU Men’s Volunteer Assistant Coach, for 6 years, and helped former US International Paul Krumpe build LMU into a perennial Top 30 team.  Jim has been fortunate to have been coached and mentored by a few great coaches, such as Chuck Clegg, Sigi Schmid, Rene Miramontes and Luis Sagastume, just to name a few.  He also holds a United States Soccer Federation B License.  Since then, Jim has coached at a few clubs, spending 12 years at Fram SK and taking a boys team, that included Assistant Coach Zach Petow, to the State Cup Finals.

“I am now both extremely excited and honored to continue my coaching life as the new Director of Soccer at Saint Katherine College, where I will be the Head Coach of Men’s and Women’s Soccer.  I am looking forward to working with the Firebird student athletes and will  strive to create a hard working, competitive and Christian environment that they will take forward through the rest of their lives.”

Go Firebirds!!!
